Most running injuries do not come from one dramatic mistake. They usually come from a mismatch between the stress you added and the stress your body was ready to handle.

That is why training load matters. Not because a formula can perfectly predict injury, but because sudden changes are one of the clearest warning signs in a training plan.

What acute-to-chronic workload means

Acute-to-chronic workload ratio, often shortened to ACWR, compares recent training load with longer-term training load.

In plain English:

  • Acute load is what you have done recently.
  • Chronic load is what your body has been prepared for over a longer window.
  • A high ratio means recent work is much higher than your usual base.
For runners, load can include mileage, duration, intensity, hills, workouts, long runs, and race efforts. A mileage jump matters, but so does a week where every run gets harder.

Why sudden spikes matter

Your body adapts to repeated stress. That is the whole point of training.

The problem is when the stress changes faster than adaptation can keep up. A runner who has been handling 20 miles per week may not be ready for 35 miles plus intervals just because motivation showed up on Monday.

Load spikes can happen when:

  • You start a plan above your current base.
  • You make up missed runs by cramming miles.
  • You add speed work and mileage at the same time.
  • You race, then resume normal training too quickly.
  • You return from sickness or travel as if nothing changed.
  • You add hills, heat, or trail terrain without counting the extra stress.
The risky part is not ambition. It is stacking too many new stresses at once.

What the research suggests

The acute-to-chronic workload idea is useful, but it is also debated.

A systematic review by Maupin and colleagues found a relationship between ACWR and injury risk across sports, while also warning that methodological issues mean the ratio should not be used alone.

Andrade and colleagues reviewed professional team-sport research and found that higher ACWR was often associated with greater time-loss injury risk, but the methods varied enough to limit strong recommendations.

A more recent meta-analysis by Qin and colleagues found injury risk was minimized when ACWR stayed around a moderate range, while again noting that calculation choices and study differences matter.

The honest takeaway for runners: training-load ratios are useful as a caution light, not a crystal ball.

Why runners should not obsess over one number

ACWR can be misleading if you treat it as a verdict.

It may miss context like:

  • Sleep.
  • Strength training.
  • Terrain.
  • Heat.
  • Shoe wear.
  • Life stress.
  • Previous injury history.
  • Whether the miles were easy or hard.
Two runners can have the same load ratio and very different risk. One may be durable, sleeping well, and running easy. The other may be under-slept, coming back from injury, and doing workouts in worn shoes.

The number matters because it starts a better conversation.

What to do after a load spike

If your recent training jumped, the safest adjustment is usually not panic. It is consolidation.

That can mean:

  • Hold mileage steady for a week.
  • Keep intensity low.
  • Move the workout later.
  • Shorten the long run.
  • Add a recovery day.
  • Avoid adding hills, speed, and volume all at once.
The goal is to let your body catch up to the work you already did.
