Rotation planner

Build a running shoe rotation that makes sense. Each pair needs a job.

A good rotation is not about owning more shoes for the sake of it. It is about matching shoes to run types, spreading load, and knowing when one pair is doing too much work.

The planner

Start with run types, then assign shoes to those jobs.

Most runners do not need a complicated system. A simple planner can keep daily trainers, speed shoes, long-run shoes, and trail pairs in the right lane.

01

Two-shoe setup

A small rotation can still be intentional.

Even two shoes can share load well: one steady daily trainer and one pair reserved for faster days, wet days, trails, or longer efforts.

  • Use the durable pair for easy mileage and recovery runs.
  • Reserve the lighter or fresher pair for workouts and long-run efforts.
  • Watch whether one pair is absorbing nearly all weekly mileage.
02

Three-plus pairs

More pairs only help when the roles stay clear.

A larger rotation can extend shoe life and sharpen feel, but it gets messy when shoe assignments are inconsistent.

  • Separate road, trail, workout, and race shoes when those roles exist.
  • Retire shoes from hard sessions before removing them from easy runs.
  • Keep mileage targets different for each shoe category.
03

Treadly workflow

Use rotation profiles instead of mental notes.

Treadly helps you map run context to shoes, then keeps each pair's mileage and wear status visible as your training shifts.

  • Create simple profiles for common run types.
  • Correct shoe assignments without losing the activity.
  • See which pair is fresh, fading, or ready to retire.
THREE STEPS
01

List the kinds of runs you actually do in a normal week.

02

Assign one or more shoes to each run type.

03

Review mileage balance every couple of weeks and adjust the roles.

Frequently asked

How many running shoes should I rotate?+

Two pairs are enough for many runners. More pairs can help when you run different surfaces, workouts, long runs, or races that benefit from different shoes.
